The Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation is proud to announce the launch of the Westside Community Grant, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at supporting nonprofit organizations on Salt Lake City’s west side. This grants program is designed to build capacity and provide resources for organizations working in the Westside.
The fund, starting with an initial investment of $500,000, reflects the Miller Family Foundation’s optimism and commitment to the vibrant communities on Salt Lake’s west side. The grant initiative supports 501(c)(3) organizations that align with the foundation’s five platforms: health and medicine, shelter and food security, education and skill development, jobs and economic self-reliance, and cultural and spiritual enrichment. These focus areas reflect the key social determinants of health and are essential to the foundation’s mission to enrich lives and strengthen communities.
“Salt Lake City’s west side holds a special place in the hearts of the Miller family and the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation,” said Don Stirling, executive director of the Miller Family Foundation. “We are grateful to work closely with community leaders, neighbors and key stakeholders and aim to be a catalyst for sustainable opportunities, ensuring that the Westside continues to flourish as a vibrant and inclusive part of Salt Lake City.”
The Miller Family Foundation launched the grant initiative on October 9, 2024, at Mestizo Coffeehouse, where government officials, community leaders, and local nonprofits gathered to discuss the rich history of the local neighborhoods and discuss potential opportunities for collaboration.
“Our mission at the Larry H. Miller Company is to enrich lives and help the communities where we all live, work and play,” said Steve Starks, CEO of the Larry H. Miller Company. “This new Westside Community Grant Initiative allows us to carry out that mission in a meaningful way that has the potential to impact generations of families. We hope this new initiative will help foster continued growth and development on the west side of Salt Lake City.”
In a pilot phase of the Westside Community Grant Initiative, the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation has committed grants to four local nonprofits, including NeighborWorks, University Neighborhood Partners, Comunidad Materna, and the Pacific Heritage Academy. This initiative is one component of the broader effort to support the Westside’s vision of growth and opportunity.
The Miller Family Foundation has contributed to numerous organizations supporting the west side of Salt Lake City and the Salt Lake Valley throughout the years. In 2024, the Miller Family Foundation contributed over $3 million to several organizations whose work is enriching the lives of individuals and families on the west side of Salt Lake City and the Salt Lake Valley, including Neighborhood House, Guadalupe School, Switchpoint, the Food Pharmacy at the University of Utah’s health clinic in Rose Park, Utah Arts Alliance, Chicanos Por La Causa, The Children’s Center, Proxima and more.
“I grew up in the Marmalade District, went to West High School, and had many friends from Rose Park and Glendale who were very proud of their communities and what they built. It makes me proud to be able to continue to partner with them on future opportunities in these neighborhoods,” said Gail Miller, chair of the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation and co-founder of the Larry H. Miller Company.
