The Giving State report uncovers why Utah is a demonstrated leader when it comes to charitable giving in the United States; the report examines who gives, why they give and the impact of giving in the state and beyond; The Giving State report provides several recommendations for how to become better givers.
Cicero has released “The Giving State 2024,” a report providing an in-depth look at charitable giving in the state, exploring the factors that influence it and the impact that giving has on the state.
Utah has long been a national leader in volunteerism and charitable giving. A recent WalletHub report ranked Utah as the second most charitable state nationally and, according to the Giving State 2024 report, Utahns volunteer at a rate more than 4.5 times higher than the national average. The Giving State explores what “good giving” looks like while identifying opportunities for improvement for both nonprofits and the community at large. As Utah continues to grow, this report provides a valuable guide to inspire and inform meaningful giving and service.
“We are proud to announce The Giving State 2024, a testament to Utah’s unmatched spirit of giving and volunteerism,” said Jacob Allen, Sr. Partner at Cicero. “This year’s analysis, insights, and stories showcase the extraordinary efforts of individuals and organizations across our state, making a profound impact in our communities. From supporting neighbors in need to fostering long-term change, Utahns continue to lead by example, demonstrating that generosity is at the heart of who we are.”
This report builds on data from The Giving State 2017 report, which covered many of the same themes. This year’s report aims to highlight the factors behind Utah’s continued philanthropic leadership and examine how recent social, economic, political, and environmental changes may be shifting philanthropic activities across the state.
“Utah is a special place. We all have a responsibility to get involved, to seek solutions to problems affecting our families and neighborhoods, and to contribute in meaningful ways to make our communities better,” said Gail Miller, chair of the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation and co-founder of the Larry H. Miller Company. “Giving is essential, but learning to give thoughtfully is even more powerful. This report is a resource for those looking to give in our community, large or small.”
The Giving State report offers valuable insights into the charitable activities shaping Utah and highlights three actionable recommendations for individuals to deepen their impact: focus strategically, increase accountability and learning, and engage expansively. These recommendations are especially timely as Giving Tuesday and the holiday season approach—a period marked by generosity and community connection. With 70% of Utahns donating to nonprofits, the report underscores the state’s remarkable spirit of giving while serving as a call to action, encouraging everyone to contribute meaningfully to strengthening our communities this season.
