Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month

At the Larry H. Miller Company, we’re proud to have a diverse and talented workforce. The individuals who make up the teams across our organization each play a vital role in our success.

September 15 – October 15, we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month and honor the traditions, cultures, and histories of those whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. This time allows us to reflect on the many contributions that those from Hispanic and Latino cultures have made to our society and our organization.

We encourage you to listen to people’s stories from these vibrant communities and connect with those around you. Visit the National Hispanic Heritage Month website to browse the virtual archives and find ways to get involved.

Larry H. and Gail Miller Enrichment Scholarship Recipient

Each year, deserving students from diverse backgrounds receive the Larry H. and Gail Miller Enrichment Scholarship to further their academic pursuits at The University of Utah and help them make significant contributions to the community. Whenever possible, students are selected from applicants whose ethnic background is under-represented in higher education in Utah or those who are first-generation college students. Lydia Altamiranda shared what the scholarship means to her and her goals for the future:

Lydia Altamiranda is a sophomore pre-MD/Ph.D. student at the University of Utah. She’s majoring in health, society and policy, double minoring in pediatric clinical research, and honors integrated health. Lydia is also completing a medical assisting and community engagement certificate. She hopes to be a pediatric cardiovascular surgeon and conduct research on healthcare gaps in primary care. Lydia would like to create a non-profit organization to help improve healthcare systems in third-world countries.

Lydia loves spending time with her family. Her mother is from Cochabamba, Bolivia and her father is from Buenos Aires, Argentina. She has two younger siblings. “Over the years, I have seen my parents work innumerable hours to support my education and they have truly given me an incredible childhood filled with happiness and memories,” said Lydia.

Lydia is actively involved on campus through leadership positions and organizations. She is on the student alumni board, the speaker’s chair for the campus events board, the event co-coordinator for the Bennion Scholars Leadership Team, a campus life mentor, honors peer mentor, and an intern for the Huntsman Cancer Institute.

“Having the Larry H. and Gail Miller Enrichment Scholarship has truly changed my life. This scholarship has given me the opportunity to make my dream a reality. It showed me that I am seen as a person with the potential to change the world, encouraging me to push myself to become the best I can be in my field,” said Lydia. “I will never forget the moment I was able to share the news with my family. I was holding back tears as I told them, and as I hugged my parents, I knew I had made it. This scholarship is not the end, but just the beginning of my career.”
