Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. We celebrate and recognize the immeasurable contributions and achievements of generations of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who have enriched America’s history and culture.

Since 1978, May has been Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. May was chosen because of two important milestones: the arrival in the United States of the first Japanese migrants on May 7, 1843, and to honor the contributions of Chinese workers who helped build the transcontinental railroad, completed May 10, 1869, in Promontory, Utah.

The Larry H. Miller Group of Companies values and champions diversity, equity and inclusion. This month, we encourage you to learn about ways to get involved and build better understanding.

We’ve compiled a few resources to help you get started:

  • PBS is highlighting AAPI stories this month through new programs that you can stream for free. View the schedule here.
  • The American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry’s Asian American and Pacific Islander Resource Library includes resources for parents, resources for trauma, Asian mental health supports, links to support groups, and anti-Asian violence resources.
  • The Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center’s Learning Together page serves as an online venue for educational content featuring interviews with AAPI community members, links to community-created educational resources, book recommendations, discussion ideas, and more.
